Call from Christians in Palestine #CancelChristmas

This is a call sent to us by Palestinians with the request to amplify. Because we did not have the time yet to translate we share it in just in English for now.

Dear people with a heart for humanity,

We are witnessing a genocide in Gaza for two months now. With tens of thousands of people martyred (killed) and wounded (77% women and children), over 1,5 million people are internally displaced and with all of Gaza being on the brink of starvation: we don't think this is a time for celebrating.

This is why we say: let’s #CancelChristmas. Also the Christian Patriarchs in Jerusalem have called for a scaled back Christmas season. Let’s make it a consumerless holiday. Let us stand in solidarity with the suffering of Palestinians and mourn so many killed. Let our gifts this year be solidarity and acts of justice. Let’s go back to the true meaning of Christmas.

This is a very concrete action you can take. Christmas is coming soon so we need to move fast. With this action we call for a permanent ceasefire for Gaza.

In Bethlehem, the birthplace of Jesus Christ, Christian Palestinians have decided to forego Christmas celebrations in solidarity with Gazans. We would like to follow this example, and we invite everybody to join us in this. #NoTime2Celebrate. This doesn't mean to cancel the holiday totally but cut back on our Christmas spending in protest to the horrible violence visited on Gaza. It’s no time to celebrate.

What can you do:

  1. Start today until 7 January (Eastern Christmas Day).

  2. Have no celebrations, no big fancy dinners and no gifts. Let’s have just a simple Christmas, without the conspicuous consumption.

  3. If you want to give someone you love a gift, give them the gift of giving. Make a donation in their name to help people in Gaza.

  4. Spread this message to all of your friends, co-workers, neighbors and family, so they can likewise scale back on what they spend for Christmas. (Share the link, copy this text, share on social media)

  5. Send the texts below to all your contacts on Messenger, WhatsApp, Telegram, X, Instagram, Twitter, TikTok and the like. (Don't share to fast to many people at once, because that will get you blocked, so take some breaks!)

  6. Use the hashtags: #CancelChristmas #NoTime2Celebrate #NoChristmas4Palestine_NoChristmas4Us

This is why this helps!

In the last months we saw successes of collective pressure on companies. One example is Starbucks that lost billions of dollars since activists began to boycott them in large numbers since the genocide of the Palestinian intensified in October. Puma divested after the pressure increased. Also, on Monday, the 11th of December, we saw that people around the world answered a call for a global strike for a permanent ceasefire in Gaza. Many people didn't go to work and didn't spend any money. Can you imagine the impact we can have if millions of people decided to say today: #NoChristmas4Palestine_NoChristmas4Us?  Stop the Christmas spending and send the important message that we want a permanent ceasefire now.

We can, as the Christian Palestinians in Jerusalem and Bethlehem have demonstrated, have a modest Christmas and like Jesus, show our solidarity with the poor and the needy, and show our grief for so many lives lost, and person injured. Let’s focus our celebration on human beings, our families, our meetings, our places of worship.

We are tired of standing by helplessly. TOGETHER we can make an economic impact! NOW is the time, because if not now, then WHEN? It’s time for a permanent ceasefire now!!

Dear friend,

I have an idea and I need your help. It’s actually a call from Christians in Bethlehem, in Palestine, the place where Jesus was born. Since in two months time tens of thousands of people were (killed) and wounded (77% women and children), over 1,5 million people are internally displaced and with all of Gaza being on the brink of starvation: we don't think this is a time for celebrating.

Therefore this year let’s #CancelChristmas. Also the Christian Patriarchs in Jerusalem have called for a scaled back Christmas season. Let’s make it a consumerless holiday. Let’s stand in solidarity with the suffering of Palestinians and mourn so many killed. Let our gifts this year be solidarity and acts of justice. Let’s go back to the true meaning of Christmas.

We are tired of standing by helplessly. Let’s make an impact TOGETHER! NOW is the time, because if not now, then WHEN? #CeasefireNow #CancelChristmas

Much love!
